Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of task-oriented activities on cognitive function and the performance of activities of daily living (ADL) in stroke patients.
Methods : Sixty stroke patients were divided into two groups: a task-oriented activities group and a traditional cognitive rehabilitation group. The intervention sessions were given five times a week for four weeks.
A Loewenstein occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) and Functional Independence Measure
(FIM) were used to measure the cognitive function and performance of ADL before and after intervention.
Results : The LOTCA and FIM scores in the two groups were significantly increased after intervention (p<.05). For some areas of LOTCA, the scores of the task-oriented activities group were significantly higher than those of the traditional cognitive rehabilitation group (p<.05). For some areas of FIM, the scores of the task-oriented activities group were significantly higher than those of the traditional cognitive rehabilitation group (p<.05).
Conclusion: In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate that task-oriented activities are helpful to enhance the cognitive function and performance of ADL in stroke patients.
